Bio

Andrew Ames, DO, is an orthopedic specialist practicing at Orthopedic Specialists of Oakland County, located in Clarkston and Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. His clinical interests include the management of shoulder, elbow, hip, and knee injuries and regenerative orthopedics. 

Dr. Ames provides a comprehensive spectrum of care utilizing the latest rehabilitation techniques, orthobiologics, minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery, and joint reconstruction. He utilizes a holistic approach to treating the whole patient. This philosophy guides his primary focus on helping patients return to a healthy, active lifestyle.

Dr. Ames completed his fellowship training in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine at the prestigious New England Baptist Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, where he served as Assistant Team Physician for the NBA Boston Celtics and Merrimack College (NCAA Division I Athletics). He also cared for athletes from Harvard University and Tufts University. 

Dr. Ames is a Michigan native, former paramedic, and entrepreneur who found his passion in orthopedics. He graduated with honors from the University of Michigan and attended medical school at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he also graduated with honors. While there, he learned the importance of holistic, patient-focused care. Dr. Ames completed his orthopedic surgery residency training at Ascension Genesys Hospital.

Dr. Ames is an active physician-scientist who is passionate about advancing the practice of sports medicine through scholarly work. His research interests include joint preservation and injury prevention, surgical implant design, and advancing joint restoration and reconstruction techniques. He is currently studying expanding indications for shoulder replacement implants and stratifying patient outcomes based on the surgical indication in collaboration with the Center for Advanced Orthopedic Studies at Harvard Medical School’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Laboratories.

Dr. Ames has authored a textbook chapter on knee cartilage injury and rehabilitation and previously won research awards for his work in ankle 

ligament injury diagnosis and repair. He has been an invited speaker at several national meetings and serves as a clinical reviewer for the American Journal of Sports Medicine and the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. He is honored to have been awarded the Dr. Mark Steiner Research Award.

After completing his sub-specialty training in Boston, Dr. Ames has returned home to Michigan to serve the communities that have supported him throughout his life. He is an avid cyclist, and when he can’t ride outdoors, he enjoys finishing at the top of his spin class. He and his wife and son enjoy hiking with their dog, traveling, and water sports.
